DMT, also known as N, N-dimethyltryptamine, is a hallucinogenic tryptamine that produces effects similar to other psychedelics, such as LSD and Psilocybin. It has been used for centuries in religious practices and rituals, primarily for its psychoactive and hallucinogenic effects. Some common effects experienced while using DMT include euphoria, floating sensation, visual and auditory hallucinations, depersonalization/disassociation, heightened sensation, epiphany, and spiritual insight.

Although popular, DMT has not been as widely discussed as its counterpart, despite its long and noble history. It is one of the most important naturally occurring hallucinogenic compounds, found in many Amazonian plants such as Ayahuasca and in trace amounts in humans, where it is derived from an essential amino tryptophan during normal metabolism. Unlike other classic hallucinogens, DMT is unique in that tolerance does not develop to its psychological effects.

Canadian chemist Richard Manske first synthesized DMT in 1921, and its discovery as the active ingredient in Cohoba led to further examination of its psychoactive properties in 1956.
